ebike back-to-school season

How to choose the right bike for back-to-school season?

With the new school year just around the corner, you've probably started shopping for essentials, but there's one item you should really add to that list: electric bikes! But how to choose the electric bicycle that suits you when the new school year is coming? Whether you are a parent or an older student, you will find the answer in this article!

Can students ride electric bikes to school?

Whether students can ride electric bikes to school depends on local regulations and school rules. In many states, children must be at least 14 years old to ride an e-bike. However, even if your state allows kids to ride e-bikes, schools may have a different opinion. So research local and state laws and age restrictions before buying an electric bike for your child. Also, contact your child's school to find out if they allow e-bikes on campus.

What kind of electric bicycle is suitable for different age groups?

For students under the age of 16, we recommend that parents purchase an electric cargo bike, as this will allow you to drive your children on their commute to and from school. In my last article, I described electric cargo bikes. This is because basically none of the e-bikes on the market today are suitable for children of this age. Instead, high school students over the age of 16 can drive e-bikes with an output speed of 28 mph and a longer range. In addition, older teens do not have the same legal restrictions as minors. If your child is old enough to drive a car, they are old enough to drive most adult e-bikes.

Let's take students over 16 years old as an example, there are many different performance bikes on the market, we can choose a suitable e-bike for our needs to meet our commute to and from school according to the following parameters.

Battery life
The battery life of an e-bike will directly affect our school commuting experience, so be sure to choose a bike with the battery range you need because the longer the range, the less time you will have to spend recharging and not have to worry about running out of power on your e-bike during your commute.

Accessories
It is very important to be able to accessorize with different e-bike accessories. When we have study materials or more things to carry to school, we can have accessories that provide us with more space to carry these things, or we can carry our best friends to and from school! This is very convenient for commuting students!

Brakes
Brakes are without a doubt the most important! A good braking system allows us to stop more safely in the event of an emergency. Hydraulic disc brakes are a great solution to this problem. Instead of using a standard mechanical cable to pull the caliper to the brake rotor, hydraulic disc brakes are activated by hydraulic fluid, which creates more power and control, and is a much better way to keep students safe while commuting!

Teach Your Kids Electric Bike Safety

Ebike safety is similar to traditional bicycle safety. When teaching your child, instill sound advice and practices, including:

  • Wear safety gear
  • Ride on sidewalks whenever possible
  • Use hand signals
  • Obey rules of the road
  • Wear bright colors
  • Use lights when necessary

All in all, electric bicycles will be the most convenient and cost-effective means of transportation for students to commute. When you have your own electric bicycle, you must pay attention to riding safety when commuting, wear helmets and obey local traffic rules!
